MCPER collaborates with IRIS Center at Vanderbilt on newly released module

A new Star Legacy Module on secondary reading instruction, featuring the expertise of MCPER researchers, is now available online. "Secondary Reading Instruction: Teaching Vocabulary and Comprehension in the Content Areas" is the latest module in the series from the IRIS Center at Vanderbilt University. Star Legacy Modules are online resources that provide information about working with students with disabilities. Specifically, MCPER Executive Director Sharon Vaughn is featured in the Wrap Up section of the module.

Article by Sharon Vaughn featured in statewide special education newsletter in Iowa

An article by MCPER Executive Director Sharon Vaughn has been featured in a statewide newsletter to parents and teachers in the Iowa special education community. "Intensifying Your Instruction: Responding to the Way a Child Thinks Enhances Performance" appeared in the September 2012 issue of the newsletter Each and Every Child, published by the Iowa Department of Education Bureau of Learner Strategies and Supports (download a PDF of the newsletter). In the article, Vaughn offers tips on intensifying instruction based on the way that individual students think, including making thinking "visible," determining and correcting the strategies that struggling students use, teaching students to identify "breakdowns" in understanding, prompting student inferencing with text, and providing task-specific feedback.

Reading Institute researchers contribute to special issue of journal

Researchers with the MCPER Reading Institute contributed three articles to a recent special issue of Learning Disabilities: A Contemporary Journal (Volume 10, Issue 1). The articles are the following: 

  • "Bridging Research and Practice for Adolescents With Reading Difficulties: An Introduction to the Special Issue" (pp. 1–4)
  • "Reading Interventions for Students With Learning Disabilities in the Upper-Elementary Grades" (pp. 5–16)
  • "Comprehension Instruction for Students With Reading Disabilities in Grades 4 Through 12" (pp. 17–33)
