MCPER welcomes 2009 Fellow Nicole Block

It is our pleasure to welcome our 2009 Meadows Fellow, Dr. Nicole Block. Block joins MCPER from a joint doctoral program at Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University in California, where she attained her Ph.D. in education with a concentration in special education. Her dissertation is entitled A Study of a Response to Intervention Model for Urban Sixth-Grade: Analyzing Reading, Language, and Learning Differences in Tier 1 and Tier 2.
Kathleen Hughes, co-coordinator for the mathematics intervention project, was named the 2009 Community Partner of the Year for Murchison Elementary School. Hughes’ selection for the award signifies that she has been integral to Murchison Elementary achieving its campus goals and that she has had a significant impact on student achievement throughout the school year. She will be honored and thanked for her contributions at the 2009 Volunteer and Partner Appreciation Reception on April 22 at the Pflugerville High School Fine Arts Center.
MCPER’s project coordinator for the Center on Instruction’s Special Education Strand successfully defended her dissertation on February 19, 2009, to officially become Dr. Katie Klingler Tackett. Dr. Tackett is a graduate of the Special Education Department of our College of Education here at UT. Her dissertation is titled “More Than the Sum of its Parts: A Multiple-Case study of the Implementation of RTI at Five Sites.” We congratulate her on this milestone and look forward to her continued success!
CREATE project hosts conference and webcast series

The Center for Research and Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE) will host a conference focused on Improving Outcomes for English Language Learners: Developing Oral Language and Literacy Across the Content Areas in October 2009.
MCPER is coordinating the College and Career Readiness Initiative: English/Language Arts Faculty Collaborative, a P–16 initiative that engages faculty members from Texas universities that offer teacher education programs and strengthens the college and work force readiness of Texas students through the improved preparation of teacher candidates. Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi leads the initiative for science faculty, Texas State University for mathematics faculty, and The University of Texas at Arlington for social studies faculty. Education Service Center Region XIII has enlisted MCPER to create a resource to help Texas teachers integrate academic vocabulary into their instruction. The purpose of this project is to identify academic vocabulary for fifth- to seventh-grade English language learners (ELLs) in Texas in the areas of English language arts and math and to develop a resource to promote the instruction of academic vocabulary. For the specific purposes of this project, the team defines academic vocabulary as the key words, concepts, and principles in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for English language arts/reading and math that will help ELLs in grades 5–7 read and understand text, develop subject-matter literacy, and demonstrate their knowledge and skills.
Dr. Saro Mohammed has been selected to serve as MCPER’s director of web-based content and dissemination. In this role, Mohammed will manage information flow on the Meadows Center website, as well as online content related to MCPER for its UT Austin partners, such as the Vaughn Gross Center and the College of Education.
MCPER’s Dr. Karrie Shogren has won this year’s Council for Exceptional Children Division for Research (CEC-DR) Early Career Publication Award for her paper Examining Individual and Ecological Predictors of the Self-Determination of Students With Disabilities. Shogren will receive the award, which carries a $1,000 honorarium, at the CEC Conference on April 3 in Seattle. The Early Career Publication Award “recognizes the critical role of research to both current practice in and the future of the field of Special Education . . . [and] recognizes individuals who have made outstanding scientific contributions in special education, in basic and/or applied research, within the first 10 years following receipt of the doctoral degree,” according to the CEC-DR website.
MCPER’s assessment coordinator for the CSR and CREATE projects successfully completed all requirements on December 10, 2008, to officially become Dr. Stephanie Stillman. Stillman is a graduate of the Religious Studies program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her dissertation is titled “Remembering the Cruelest Month: The Network, Labor, and Haunting of Memories of Columbine.” We congratulate her on this milestone and look forward to her continued success!

MCPER welcomes Dr. Sharon Jackson to its Board of Directors. Jackson brings years of experience working in classrooms, in education service centers, at the district level in the Texas Education Agency, and with the Texas State Legislature. In addition, she has worked with professional organizations and other state entities, including the Governor’s Office. We look forward to working with her!
