Description of the Project
The Vaughn Gross Center collaborated with The University of Texas System and the Children’s Learning Institute to develop and conduct professional development sessions for Texas teachers that address the components and features of the following state standards:
- The revised English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) and Spanish Language Arts and Reading (SLAR) Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which were adopted in 2008 to be implemented beginning with the 2009-2010 school year
- English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
- Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS)
The professional development was delivered in a training-of-trainers format, with education service centers and large districts participating in 2-day sessions in Austin, Houston, and Dallas during the spring of 2009. The revised TEKS will serve as the English language arts and reading curriculum framework for kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms beginning with the 2009-2010 school year.
Training materials and documents are available on the support website at www.englishspanishteks.net.
