CRRFTAC preps for professional development trips

CRRFTAC staff members are offering professional development services in Oklahoma, Missouri, and West Virginia this month. Topics vary according to the needs of the states, but all services are geared toward improving reading instruction and, ultimately, student outcomes.

CRRFTAC also will hold a Training of Trainers session on March 29-30 in Chicago. The session will focus on An Introductory Guide for Reading First Coaches, which CRRFTAC staffers developed.

HEC seminar set for March 31 in San Antonio

The next Higher Education Collaborative (HEC) seminar is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 31 in San Antonio. The topic will be English language learners. Speakers include Javier Ayala from The University of Texas - Brownsville, Alba Ortiz of UT Austin’s Special Education Department, and the Center’s Kathryn Prater. Only HEC members and Vaughn Gross Center employees can attend the seminar.

An HEC for educational administrators and education leadership faculty also is in the works; the first seminar will be May 24 in Austin.

Spotlight 3-Tier to train K-3 teachers

The Vaughn Gross Center’s Kim Rodriguez, the 3-Tier facilitator for La Porte Elementary, and Christie Cavanaugh will provide Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literary Skills (DIBELS) training for all K-3 teachers on March 21.

The team already has provided follow-up training for the bilingual teachers at Hillcrest Elementary for IDEL (the Spanish version of DIBELS), and with collaboration from Kathryn Prater, the project coordinator for Bilingual 3-Tier, Velma Afanador-Pérez trained the bilingual kindergarten teachers on Reading Games and provided necessary implementation materials.

Kathleen Walker, facilitator for Martin Walker Elementary, and Cavanaugh will provide professional development on using data and grouping on March 22 with all Spotlight 3-Tier K-3 teachers.
