Language comprehension is a critical component of skilled reading comprehension, but prior research on the importance of working memory to the comprehension of written text has provided mixed results. Using latent change score modeling, a complex latent estimation technique, working memory was found to have a positive influence on the development of reading comprehension skills from first through fourth grades, even when controlling for language comprehension. The presentation will end with a discussion on the ways in which these models can be used as predictive tools for identifying struggling readers.
