SERP Math launches statewide assessment scale-up effort

After creating and field-testing two early mathematics assessments in four Texas school districts, the Special Education Research Project - Mathematics (SERP Math) team is now accepting registration by schools in Texas to participate in the RTI: Early Mathematics Project, a statewide standardization scale-up of the two measures.

The Texas Early Mathematics Inventories - Progress Monitoring (TEMI-PM) and Texas Early Mathematics Inventories - Outcome (TEMI-O) measures for K-2 students will be further standardized in the statewide scale-up. The TEMI-PM consists of four 2-minute timed measures related to components of the Number, Operation, and Quantitative Reasoning mathematics Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Because students are scored in both rate and accuracy, the test can be seen as a gauge of fluency. The TEMI-O measures are designed to assess content across the mathematics TEKS.

Testing will be done three times during the 2007-2008 school year - in the fall, winter, and spring. In all, the project will test students in 100 classrooms each in kindergarten, first, and second grade across the state. The classrooms will be selected based on a match between the school’s demographics and that of the state and on school district approval.

By early June 2007, more than 70 schools representing 17 Education Service Centers (ESCs) had already registered to participate.

The ultimate goal of the project, when completed, is to create a professional development module for ESCs to provide teachers and administrators interested in implementing RTI Mathematics in K-2. The module will include assessments and validated interventions, including lessons in early numeracy, arithmetic combinations, base 10 and place value, word problem-solving, and other mathematics TEKS. The statewide assessment scale-up is a major step toward accomplishing this goal.
