Overview

MCPER is collaborating with Alice Independent School District (ISD) in its efforts to improve reading instruction and student outcomes. Alice ISD, in South Texas near Corpus Christi, serves more than 5,200 prekindergarten through grade 12 students. MCPER is providing assistance to Alice ISD’s six elementary schools—Mary R. Garcia, Hillcrest, Noonan, Saenz, Salazar, and Schallert—by building capacity among district and campus personnel to implement evidence-based and sustainable literacy practices.

This work relies on continual communication and collaboration with Alice ISD Superintendent Dr. Salvador Cavazos, other district personnel, and the six elementary principals. Technical assistance and professional development activities stem from project staff members and Alice ISD leaders’ identification of strengths and needs. Project staff members will implement the following model of support:

  • Identify district, campus, and classroom strengths and needs in K–4 reading
  • Collaborate with district and campus leaders to build on strengths and address needs
  • Provide services that foster cohesive implementation
  • Assess effectiveness of support
