Overview
The purpose of this project is to:
- Identify academic vocabulary for fifth- to seventh-grade English language learners in Texas in the areas of English language arts and math.
- Promote the instruction of academic vocabulary through the dissemination of an academic vocabulary resource for Texas teachers.
For the specific purposes of this resource, we have defined academic vocabulary as the key words, concepts, and principles in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for English language arts/reading and math that will help English language learners in grades 5–7 read and understand text, develop subject-matter literacy, and demonstrate their knowledge and skills.
Expected Outcome
This project will result in a resource to help Texas teachers integrate academic vocabulary into their instruction. Each education service center will receive an electronic copy of the final product, and the Meadows Center will host Web-based professional development seminars to provide an overview of the resource and suggested uses.
Timeline
The project is currently under way, with the final product due for dissemination in January 2010.
