Meghan Coleman leads brown bag discussion on response to intervention

Meghan Coleman, doctoral student in The University of Texas at Austin Department of Special Education and project coordinator for the Special Education Strand of the Center on Instruction, led a brown bag discussion titled “Implementing RTI at the High School Level.” The discussion was adapted from a presentation by Mark Shinn at the National Association of School Psychologists 2010 annual convention. Coleman’s presentation is posted in the MCPER Library and is available for download.

Gary Phye delivers MCPER Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Gary Phye, professor in the Department of Psychology and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, delivered a MCPER distinguished lecture, titled “Cognitive Training for Problem-Solving Transfer,” on April 19. Dr. Phye is an educational psychologist whose research and scholarly interests focus on academic learning and problem-solving transfer, with an emphasis on the use of technology as a tool to facilitate personal knowledge construction.

Ann Turnbull delivers second annual Mollie Villeret Davis Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Ann Turnbull, the Ross and Marianna Beach distinguished professor and co-founder and co-director of the Beach Center on Disability at the University of Kansas, led MCPER’s second annual Mollie Villeret Davis Distinguished Lecture on March 11. Turnbull presented two talks, Transitioning to Enviable Lives for Adults With Autism and Beyond Evidence-Based Practice: Wisdom-Based Action as a Process of Facilitating IDEA Outcomes for Students and Quality of Life Outcomes for Families. In addition, Turnbull used the opportunity to present the Jay Turnbull Fellowship to Dr. Nina Zuna of MCPER’s Autism Spectrum Disorders Institute. Turnbull presented the award on behalf her husband, Dr. Rud Turnbull, who was unable to attend. The award—named in honor of their son, Jay—recognizes researchers and doctoral students affiliated with the Beach Center who work to better the lives of those with disabilities. At a reception after the lectures, faculty members, staff members, and students talked with Dr. Turnbull about her son and her research.

Brown Bag

Dr. Ann Levine—a clinical neuropsychologist at the Texas Child Study Center, Seton/Dell Children’s Hospital—led a Brown Bag chat about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Screening, Assessment, and Treatment in the Under-Five Population Population on December 2.
